Rocking in 2011 - WSCA DJs Broadcast From Market Square
    January 16th, 2011

    Continued from January Tidings….

Cindy Bistoury, a new WSCA voluneer, whipped off her scarf, tossed one end to Jean Proulx, WSCA volunteer coordinator,  to create a limbo bar, and the crowd just couldn’t get enough! DJ Kevin Caron said, “People were dancing all night long, from kids and their parents to a rowdy bunch of revelers toward midnight. “Walk Like an Egyptian” was a big crowd pleaser, and we received multiple requests for “Cotton Eyed Joe” (which we played twice).”

Twenty seconds to midnight Rocky started the countdown as the crowd of hundreds joined in. At midnight, the street was packed, the biggest crowd ever for WSCA’s Market Square dance. A special thank you goes out to Kevin Caron and Cindy Bistoury, new volunteers who spent the entire evening with old timers Jenny Freeman, Jean,  and  Rocky. And thanks to Pro Portsmouth for inviting WSCA to provide music for the station’s fourth First Night celebration.

DJs said it was the best view in town, watching the New Year’s Eve crowd celebrating the birth of 2011.
The above article was compiled by Terry Farish  from the notes of Jean Proulx, Jenny Freeman, Tim Stone, and Kevin Caron.

Two New Board Members and a New Vice Chair
    January 12th, 2011

Burt Cohen and Charles A. Griffin were elected to Portsmouth Community Radio’s Board of Trustees at its January 11 meeting and Terry MacDonald was elevated to Vice Chair.

Burt is well known to WSCA listeners and volunteers as a seven-term state senator (1990-2004) and once-candidate for U.S. Senate. He is also the host of The Burt Cohen Show, originally called Portsides (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12 noon-1 pm) and of Fine Aged Rock (Thursdays, 10 am- noon).

Charlie Griffin has practiced law in Portsmouth since 1974 and has deep roots in the community. He served on the Portsmouth City Council for two years and on the Portsmouth School Board for 12 (six as Chairman). He is also a former member of Portsmouth Crimeline, a former corporator and State Chairman of New Hampshire Catholic Charities Annual Appeal. He is presently a member of the Seacoast Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition as well as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Piscataqua Savings Bank. He has been a member of the WSCA Audio Theater Players for several years and has recently completed Module One and Module Two training. As an attorney, and through his involvement in these many organizations, he has had the opportunity to make many speeches and presentations.

Terry MacDonald retired at the end of 2006 after a 45-year career as an award-winning Copywriter, Creative Director and President of a Boston-headquartered advertising agency with a national reputation.  He was also, for 10 years, an Adjunct Professor at Boston University’s College of Communications, where he taught a graduate-level advertising course to students from all over the world. During his long career, he delivered speeches and workshops to audiences of advertising and radio professionals throughout New England, New York and Washington, DC. He is a former Board member of the Boston Advertising Club, the New England Broadcasting Association, and the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts, Chairman of the New England Board of Governors of the American Association of Advertising Agencies, and a present member of the Seacoast Jazz Society’s Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the NAACP’s Seacoast Branch. Terry is Portsmouth Community Radio’s Jazz Director and host of Jazz Straightahead (Wednesdays, 6-9 am). He joined the Board in May of 2010.
