For those of you who don’t know, a great new artistic space just opened up in Kittery. It is called The Dance Hall. This is a great space for artists who havn’t had any and a place where the community can both learn to dance and enjoy live music and dance. How this non-profit came into existence is a truly touching story of gratitude and generosity.
We are very excited to welcome Drika Overton, experienced dancer and founding artistic director of The Dance Hall on Monday morning.

The seacoast is so rich in the arts as can often be seen through the non-profits we have on our show. From visual artists, to theatre to the humanities, not to mention the music (the list goes on!), there is no doubt a culture surrounding the arts here. Yet, not everyone is aware of this and perhaps don’t understand the importance of keeping the art culture alive and well. Art-Speak was created as a direct result of the Portsmouth Cultural Plan. It’s mission is to “promote appreciate, awareness, participation, and dialogue in support of arts and culture.” Even for someone, like myself, who is interested in the arts, sometimes I find myself asking where do I start? I want to take a pottery class…where do I find that? I want to support local artists and buy a painting for my empty wall…where are they being sold? Where do I find supplies for my camera, or how do I get into graphic design? All of these questions can be answered on Art-Speak’s straight-forward, user friendly and comprehensive website, filled with all things related to the arts: www.art-speak.org.
Our very own host, Liz Wright, is on the board of Art-Speak. On Monday she is bringing along with her the President, Steve McHenry and the one and only staff person, Sue Cobler.

As a kid, I have fond memories of going to the Children’s Museum in my home town, exploring each room with it’s creativity and learning induced environment. As and adult, I am still fascinated by the content at Children’s Museums! I have not yet had the opportunity to go to the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire but I have heard nothing but great things. Now located in Dover, the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire provides learning opportunities for children and serves as an educational resource for schools, families and communities. Their vision is great: “to inspire children to experience all that is in the world as an opportunity to learn.”
Join us on Monday morning as we welcome Paula Rais, Community Outreach & Visitor Services and Jane Bard, Education Director of The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire.

One of the great things about Portsmouth is it’s historical preservation. The Moffatt-Ladd House, located downtown, was built between the years 1760 and 1763 and has been open to the public as a historic museum since 1912. One of the many neat facts about the Moffatt-Ladd house is that it belonged to one of New Hampshire’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence. Beautiful gardens surround the house including the original 18th century horse chestnut tree.
Join us on Monday as we welcome Barbara Ward from the Moffatt-Ladd House & Garden to find out more intriguing historical facts and talk about their Warehouse project and much more.

As the late American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher Elbert Hubbard so exquisitely states “Art is not a thing; it is a way.” ThePortsmouth Museum of Art encompasses this thought by being a community centered museum, creating collaborative opportunities among artists and art organizations and by presenting a complete art experience that includes literature, poetry, performance art, film and other technologies. Not only do they present art from established local, national and international artists but, hear ye, hear ye, emerging artists are presented as well! If you want to learn about art, talk about art in relation to current events, other cultures and social issues or any other diverse viewpoints, Portsmouth Museum of Art is the place to be.
Today at 9am, we welcome Cathy Sununu from the Portsmouth Museum of Art to talk about their really cool current exhibit SugiPOP! and how we can find the artist in all of us.

Despite the Internet, libraries continue to see more traffic than ever. Here in Maine and New Hampshire, our libraries have kept pace with technology. Our libraries are also committed to keeping books on the shelves, not in the bonfires. I’m very excited that we’ve been able to pull together a library show on both the local and state level. We will be welcoming Maine State Librarian, Linda Lord; New Hampshire State Librarian, Michael York; Robert Waldman, Director of the York Library; and last but certainly not least Mary Ann List, Director of the Portsmouth Library to our studio this morning.
Today will be my last show on Portsmouth At Large. It’s been a great three years and I want to thank Liz Wright, Peg O’Neil, and Valerie Smith for all the great interviews we’ve conducted. But I’m not leaving the station and you can still tune in alternate Thursdays from 6-8pm to hear me on Soul Vaccination!

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Granite State College is but one of the network of 118 lifelong learning institutes throughout the U.S. OLLI provides adults over age 50 with opportunities to learn via lectures, short courses, and other educational activities that are planned by its members. There are no tests, no grades, and no need for prior classroom experience – just the chance to join peers in lifelong learning for enrichment.
Judy Zubrow, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and Pete Winthrop, a member of the Curriculum Committee, are both members of OLLI at Granite State College. Pete helps develop the Seacoast OLLI programs and Judy is one of the folks who brought OLLI to NH.
I’ve just reviewed what they are offering for the fall. I’m psyched I’m over 50!!

Bess Palmisciano
In 2000, Newmarket resident Bess Palmisciano went as a tourist to Niger. There she was impressed with resilience of the Nigerian peoples, a nomadic tribe who have developed complex societies in harmony with the Sahara desert near and in which they live. Facing the difficulties of drought and the modern world, these peoples have struggled to survive while maintaining their traditions and providing education for their children. Wanting to help, Bess began Rain for the Sahel and Sahara, an organization that assists in building schools, creating cooperatives, and more.
On Monday, Bess will be the guest on Portsmouth at Large where she will talk about these people and the great work RAIN does in New Hampshire to assist these incredibly strong peoples.
