    May 16th, 2013

Tune in to The Free Speech Zone on Sunday night May 19th at 7 pm to hear “Dirty Wars”: Obama’s intensification of all components of the Bush war programs, a talk by Jeremy Scahill given at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, on April 27th, recorded by Truth and Justice Radio. Journalist/author  Jeremy Scahill gives a hard-hitting address discussing some of the dirtiest, ugliest, and most murderous secrets of the Obama administration and that of several earlier Presidents. Scahill is author of the new book “Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battlefield”, and Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army”. Scahill observes that Obama not only
continues all the outrageous Bush programs of secrecy, war promotion, civil liberties elimination, and lies and coverups in full force, but in fact has intensified them. Meanwhile the great body of liberals who were angry at Bush
don’t seem to want to criticize Obama

    April 25th, 2013

William Blum: Is it a War on Terrorism or Expansion of the Empire?  Recorded  March 9, 2007 by L.A. Sound Posse at Venice United Methodist Church, Venice, CA  William Blum is an American author, and critic of United States foreign policy. A former State Department
employee, he left the organization in 1967 due to his opposition to the Vietnam War. From 1972 to 1973 Blum was stationed in Chile, where he reported on the Allende government’s “socialist experiment”. In the mid-1970s, he worked in London with ex-CIA agent Philip Agee and his associates. Agee wrote a critique of CIA operations in his book Inside the Company: CIA Diary.  Blum was the founder and editor of the Washington Free Press, one of the many newspapers in the loosely organized U.S. underground press in the 1960s and 1970s that opposed the Vietnam War.

In the late 1980s, Blum moved to Los Angeles to work on a documentary on U.S. foreign policy based on his own book Killing Hope with  filmmaker Oliver Stone but the project ultimately floundered. In his writing, Blum  devotes substantial attention to CIA interventions and assassination plots. Blum describes himself as a socialist and has supported Ralph Nader’s presidential campaigns. He currently circulates a monthly newsletter by email called “The Anti-Empire Report”. Blum’s work is recommended by famous people including Noam Chomsky, Helen Caldicott, & Oliver Stone.

Pledge Drive Shows: The Free Speech Zone - Sunday - December 2nd - 7-8 pm - Host: DJ Big Brother / Then Stay Tuned for “Lives in the Balance” 8-9 pm
    December 1st, 2012

The Free Speech Zone and Lives In The Balance hosts the Harvest the Power
of Community WSCA pledge drive on Sunday, December 1st, 2012. Please call
and support the diverse programming you will only hear on Portsmouth
Community Radio. Thank you very much.

    NOVEMBER 30, 2012

    Dear Friends,

Look what we’re brewing up over at Portsmouth Community Radio! This very cool mug is just one of the many reasons why you should consider making a donation to Portsmouth Community Radio during our eight-day Harvest the Power of Community drive, which began on Thursday, November 29.

“This drive is an opportunity to celebrate our eight years of local, independent, and commercial-free programming produced by local folks for our community,” said Jean Proulx, the station’s Pledge Drive Director. ”Although WSCA is all volunteer, nearly 100 strong, we still have operating costs in order to stay on air. As we look to our ninth year, we’re reaching out to our listeners to support us in our Harvest the Power of Community drive. Our goal is to reach $25,000. Our listenership understands the importance of local programming - this simply isn’t available anywhere else.”

Making a pledge by calling 603-430-9722 (for this brand new, oversized mug or a newly designed T-shirt - or both if you pledge $106.10 or more) is a great way to show your support for Portsmouth Community Radio. And, throughout the drive, WSCA will be donating the first dollar of every pledge to disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Keep reading for more reasons to become a member or to renew your membership!

One of the highlights of our Harvest the Power of Community drive is our Live Music Marathon scheduled for Sunday, December 2, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Shawn Henderson, host of Stay Tuned and Live Stay Tuned (Fridays, 1:30-5 p.m.), has assembled 17 acts to perform throughout the day in the studio to be broadcast over the airwaves.

Be sure to tune in or come on down to the station at 909 Islington Street and pledge to be entered to win a $400 gift certificate generously donated by Portsmouth Kayak Company.

Check out the amazing lineup Shawn has put together for our Live Music Marathon:

The Free Speech Zone - Sunday - February 26th - 7-8pm - Host: DJ Big Brother / Then Stay Tuned for “Lives in the Balance” - 8-9pm
    February 23rd, 2012

Tune in to The Free Speech Zone on Sunday night February 26th at 7 pm to hear an Agony Column Podcast interview with Matt Taibbi, author of the bestseller Griftopia: A Story of Bankers, Politicians, and the Most Audacious Power Grab in American History. The financial crisis that exploded in 2008 isn’t past but prologue. The grifter class, made up of the largest players in the financial industry and the politicians who do their bidding, has been growing in power, and the crisis was only one terrifying manifestation of how they’ve hijacked America’s political and economic life.  Matt Taibbi has combined deep sources, trailblazing reportage, and provocative analysis to create the most lucid, emotionally galvanizing  account yet written of this ongoing American crisis. He offers fresh reporting on the backroom deals of the bailout; tells the story of Goldman Sachs, the “vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity”; and uncovers the hidden commodities bubble that transferred billions of dollars to Wall Street while creating food shortages around the world. Griftopia is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the labyrinthine inner workings of this country, and the profound consequences for us all. A brilliantly illuminating and darkly comic tale of the ongoing financial and political crisis in America.

Tune in to The Free Speech Zone on Sunday night February 5th at 7 pm to hear a Media Matters - Bob McChesney interview with Mickey Huff & Peter Phillips of Project Censored.  Every year since 1976, Project Censored has produced a Top-25 list of underreported news stories and a book, Censored, dedicated to the stories that ought to be top features on the nightly news, but that are missing because of media bias and self-censorship. This yearbook features the top stories listed democratically in order of importance according to students, faculty, and a national panel of judges. Each of the top stories is presented at length, alongside updates from the investigative reporters who broke the stories.  Censored is one of the strongest life signs of our current collective desire to get the news we citizens need—despite what Big Media tells us.
