Tune in to The Free Speech Zone on Sunday night January 1st 2012 at 7 pm to hear a talk by Tariq Ali, titled: Islam and its discontents, given at The University of Auckland NZ on March 17th, 2011. As US backed dictators crumble and fall in the Middle East, heralding a new Arab reawakening, what is the likely impact of all this on the region and elsewhere? And how will these changes affect the jihadi groups that have been active in the region? The Saudi Kingdom is the refuge not just for retired dictators but is also the area that has provided al-Qaeda with most of its early recruits. Arab democracy will become effective only if it deals with the economic problems that confront most of its citizens. Political solutions are no longer enough. London-based and published on every continent, Tariq Ali has been a leading figure of the international left since the 1960s. He is an editor of New Left Review and has written more than 20 books on world history and politics as well as seven novels. Born in Pakistan he attended Oxford University where he became involved in student politics and the movement against the Vietnam war. He is a critic of neoliberal economics and his book The Clash of Fundamentalisms: Crusades, Jihads and Modernity was a response to 9/11. His latest book is The Obama Syndrome: War Abroad.

Ok! It’s now a New Year with the unknown ahead but the good things just keep rolling along. It’s time for another BIG BAND MONDAY on “Under the Radar”—January 2nd 2012 from 8-10pm. Your host Steve will be swinging with the BIG BANDS again, as the only BIG BAND radio show on the Seacoast plays the tunes even your grandma can “jump’n jve” to.
This month brings more TID-BITS of BIG BAND history from the Palomar Big Band Web site. The Palomar is an interactive, member-driven blog for those who love to talk about the BIG BANDS and the Swing Era. You’ll hear the factoids and listen to the music concerning the BIG BAND history for the month of January.
Steve’s featured performer for this show is the leader of a swinging big band that rivaled on record, and exceeded in person, the orchestras of Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Count Basie. Get ready to have your feet tappin’ to Mr. Jimmy Lunceford and His Harlem Express. You’ll hear studio as well as live recordings of Lunceford’s distinctive two-beat swing. You’ll understand why Lunceford’s aggregation was noted less for its soloists than for its ensemble work.
So, by all means, listen to ‘Under the Radar” with Steve when the first Monday of the month comes around. Get ready to jump’n jive” to Goodman, Shaw, Miller Martin, Kenton, Hampton and of course Ellington with the Seacoast’s only true Big Band show with Steve. And who knows even a special quest may show up!!
So if you like BIG BANDS, swing music, horns and plenty of them, then by all means listen to ‘Under the Radar-BIG BAND Mondays’ the first Monday of each month, from 8:00 to 10:00PM, on WSCA 106.1 FM or on the web at portsmouthcommunityradio.org Don’t forget if you have a BIG BAND request of any kind or just want to chat you can e-mail Steve and the Under the Radar-BIG BAND Show at wscautr@yahoo.com
And remember, as Steve says, “He loves you madly”………………….
Rabbi Michael Lerner chairs the Network of Spiritual Progressives and is editor of Tikkun Magazine, and he argues that the spirit and origins of both Christmas and Hanukah are about fighting against economic injustice and imperialism. He says Occupy Wall Street is consistent with the true meaning of the holidays. Tune in Thursday at noon or catch it when you can on podcast on iTunes or theburtcohenshow.com.
And as always from ten to noon it’s Fine Aged Rock, with some tasty Christmas and Hanukah goodies for you.
Enjoy!!

Collins to discuss how the real purpose of US military presence in that pivotal Central Asian country is obscured, and the crucial importance of restoration and control of the world’s largest supply of opium for the world heroin markets and heroin’s use as a geopolitical weapon against opponents, especially Russia. He talks about Washington orchestrating the Egyptian as well as other regional regime changes from Syria to Yemen to Jordan and well beyond in a process referred to as “creative destruction,” Libya’s role in Washington’s greater Middle East project, the major players in the New World Order such as the Rockefellers, Soros, Washington’s National Endowment for Democracy, the New Silk Road project and pipeline politics, and more!

Thursday on PAWSitive Thoughts a very serious topic-the slaughter of America’s horses ..Jean’s guests, Cheryl Robinson horse rescuer owner, trainer for the last 30 yrs.., Suzanne Bryant, barn mgr at the NH SPCA & Monica Webb a long-time activist against the inhumane slaughter of horses and advocate for the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act -will talk about the cruelty of horse slaughter—what you need to know about it and how you can help to end it.
Some of the program’s content will be graphic as Jean’s guests will explain how American horses – considered by most to be companion animals – are killed at the slaughter houses and talk about, in detail, the unimaginable suffering they experience.
NOTE: J will unveil a new name for the program in January 2012

This week is our annual fall fundraising show when we appeal to you to pick up your phone and make a pledge of support to keep unique and valuable shows like this one on the air. As you know, we’re a non profit, volunteer-operated radio station. Every dollar we raise is important to us. We ask that you donate $10, $25, $50, $100 or more—whatever you feel fits your budget. You can put it on a credit card, send us a check later, whatever works for you. This year, we’re asking that you also consider a sustaining membership: Choose a monthly amount you feel you can commit to, and you can have it drawn from your checking account or from a credit card each month. (Of course, the arrangement is cancelable at any time.) You can do this by phone when you call in, or you can do it on the website.
Thank you so much for all you do already. And I hope we’ll be hearing from you during this important pledge drive.
Kind regards, Brad aka dj Big Brother
