WSCA News & Notes
Have you been intimately confronted with the dying process? What can we say to someone who is dying? How can we break the news of our own impending death.
On the next “What Can I Say?” radio broadcast join us for a sensitive look at the dying process and how we can communicate with one another during this heartrending and sometimes beautiful life passage.
Our guest will be Portsmouth Regional Hospital neurologist Patricia Locuratolo. Earlier this year, Dr. Locuratolo hosted a panel discussion in York, Maine in response to a controversial article that had been printed in The New Yorker magazine entitled: “Letting Go: What should medicine do when it can’t save your life?” by Atul Gawande.
Please join us to explore these issues. We will be taking phone calls on this broadcast, so if you listen live we may be able to speak with you on the air.
To read more about Dr. Locuratolo’s panel discussion visit: Dealing with destiny and end-of-life care

John Dehner stars as Paladin in a 1959 episode of the classic western, Have Gun Will Travel, entitled Helen of Abajinian (30 min) . This radio series, that actually came after the CBS TV series began, rivaled Gunsmoke in terms of the quality of the script, acting, sound effects, and music. We have aired many episodes of this series since 2004, but have not repeated one. Fortunately the shows were aired at a time when technology allowed the preservation of the shows. If you remember Richard Boone’s portrayal of “Paladin”, you will be surprised to hear John Dehner’s play the same character, but in a very different way.
The Milton Berle Show featured the ex-vaudevillian in a weekly comedy variety show jam packed with his rapid delivery of punch lines… some of them actually ones that he wrote… lots of funny characters and banter between guests, announcer, and Milton. Each show also featured a theme comedy skit and tonight’s is A Saltue to the Old West, and it originally aired on CBS in October of 1947 (30 min). Though Milton Berle was moderately popular on radio, because his humor included a great deal of visual touches, he didn’t really make it big until he moved to television. He was so popular on TV that he is credited with selling more televisions than all the brick and mortar stores combined, that is why he is often referred to as “Mr. Television.”
Our very own WSCA Audio Theatre Players recreate an Antony Ellis’s thriller that was heard both on Escape (1953) and Suspense (1955) and is entitled I Saw Myself Running (27 min). This show was recorded on August 11, 2011 and will be aired for the first time tonight. It is a mesmerizing story of a young wife named Susan who is plagued by a recurring nightmare dream in which she meets a woman who looks like her, but has a different voice. The woman in the dream is constantly running from a dark and ominous cloud-like creature that is chasing her through long, damp, and endless passageways. Susan begins to blur the line between dreams and reality and then she…. well you have to tune in to find out what happens.
This play features (above photo l-r) Kim Sedlock as the Sue, the girl in the dream, Sofia Piel as Susan, Mike Nelson as Jeffrey, Susan’s husband, and John Lovering (not shown.. for good reason) as Dr. Williams. The show was directed and edited by John Lovering and contains over 30 sound effects, musical bridges, special audio effects… a great script, terrific acting, very interesting sound effects and musical score (created with computer software - Smartsound and Sony) make for, what we think, is an excellent and rather unnerving show. Be sure to listen in… this is Community Radio Arts and Entertainment by local non-professional actors… who do a terrific job! Incidentally, the show was so frightening that even the actors were scared!
We will also air Clayton “Bud” Collyer starring in The Adventures of Superman, Episode V of “Airplane Disaster” from May of 1940 (10 min)

Years. Graeber talks about his fascinating study of, and polemic on, debt. It’s about the role of debt in human society and what to do about it today. How real is the debt? And what’s the “debt crisis” really about? David Graeber says that debt has been with us since the beginning of money, in fact, the first form of money was debt, as it is today, and, without it, such things like markets, the military and the state, would not be possible.

From the University of Wisconsin’s WHA radio series of the 1970′s comes EARPLAY, a collection of contemporary audio plays that were originally aired on NPR. Tonight you hear a now famous actress, Kathy Bates, when at the age of 30 she starred in an EARPLAY production entitled “The Porch.” The play is set in th backyard of a middle-class Texas home. Pearl, the younger sister, is preparing a going-away party for her older sister, Jewel, a beautician who is bored with small town life and is heading off hopefully to the big city. As the two bustle about setting out food and putting up decorations, their conversation reveals progressively more and more of their differences and dreams…and of the emptiness which has pervaded both their lives. This is an extremely well-done play by writer Jack Heifner. It originally aired on February 12, 1978. It runs 55 minutes.
Mr. Vincent Price as Simon Templar, “The Saint” - Originally a series of novels by Leslie Charteris, Simon Templar, better known as The Saint, also starred in seven RKO movies in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The Saint was known as the “Robin Hood of Modern Crime.” He’s usually sharp enough to stick to slinging witty words like arrows, but sometimes thugs required a few slugs that were readily delivered by The Saint. Tonight listen to a show originally broadcast on April 8th, 1951 entitled “The Ghost Who Came To Dinner.”
Fannie Brice stars in her most well-known role on radio, Baby Snooks. Hanley Stafford plays “Daddy” Lancelot Higgins in a skit heard during the Maxwell House Coffee Time Show on February 12th, 1942… two years before Fannie Brice got her own show… this skit is entitled “Tent in the Living Room.”
Tune in to The Free Speech Zone on Sunday night August 7th at 7 pm to hear Robert Scheer, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the progressive online news site Truthdig.com & David Dayen, political writer at FireDogLake.com discuss how “The Debt Deal Was Capitulation Not Compromise”. Originally broadcast on Uprising Radio on August 1st. The debt ceiling-deficit reduction deal will cut at least 2.4 Trillion in spending and the debt ceiling will be raised by about $1 trillion immediately, a short-term increase to avoid default.
