During Portsmouth Community Radio’s 2012 Fall Fund Drive we promised to make a donation to another non-profit of $1 for every pledge we received.
With the kind of winter weather that we have had, and a busy schedule on his part, it took us awhile to get Ryan Glen Hirsch (photo left and below) a NH volunteer of Occupy New England, to come to our studio to receive a check in the amount of $211 for Occupy New England’s disaster relief project that is ongoing in New Jersey as a result of Hurricane Sandy…. their project is called Occupy Sandy.
On Thursday, March 28th, Ryan made it to our studio where our Volunteer Coordinator and Pledge Drive Director, Jean Proulx (photo left), presented him with a check during Station Talk (Thursdays, 1-1:30 pm). Jean had a chance to interview Ryan about the great work Occupy New England is doing to help the people of New Jersey who are still in need of support even after all this time… that gives us a sense of the tremendous amount of damage Hurricane Sandy caused.
Portsmouth Community Radio was happy to make the donation and we thank all of you who made pledges during our Fall Pledge Drive so that we were able to share your generosity with another worthy non-profit. That is what being a “Community” radio station is all about… and we will continue this policy with our upcoming Spring Pledge Drive May 3rd to the 9th.

On behalf of all the dedicated volunteers at Portsmouth Community Radio, a great big thank-you to the Seacoast community for its tangible support of our programming during our on-air Pledge Drive of last week.
This has been an important year for our all-volunteer radio station, a year in which we re-committed ourselves to our mission of delivering radio programming to reflect the interests and tastes of the community we serve. We’ve taken a big step in that direction, having focused increasingly on our News and Public Affairs programming. We’ve expanded the number of such programs on our air. We’ve been out in the community, interviewing residents and visitors. And when Portsmouth went to the polls to elect its City Council and a new mayor, Portsmouth Community Radio was on the scene, reporting the results just as the votes were tallied.
We set a goal of $25,000 for our Pledge Drive this time around, our most ambitious to date. During the on-air portion of our semi-annual effort, we brought in $10,000—a good start. Within a week or so, we will be in the mail with what represents the second piece of the Drive. We expect that this will bring in additional donations to bring us closer to our goal.
In the meantime, we know that many listeners want to support their community radio station, that some had intended to but didn’t get the chance. To them, our message is that it’s not too late. This website offers another opportunity to help us achieve our goal and keep community-focused radio coming to the Seacoast. Just click on “Join Online” and follow the prompts to make a secure donation providing credit card or checking account information. And while you’re there, we ask you to please consider a sustaining membership.
Thank you again to our supportive listeners, without whom none of our programming would be possible.
Ann Bliss
Chair, Board of Trustees

From 10:00 to noon every Saturday morning, WSCA will be doing live on-site broadcasts from the Portsmouth Farmers’ Market. Every half hour during the ‘Scratchy 45s’ show, Kim Sedlock and Charlie Griffin will be interviewing a wide variety of the market’s clients and vendors, including newcomers, longtime residents, performers (from the WSCA live music stand), local farmers and craftsmen of all sorts.
We have been asking what people are buying at the market, listening to on community radio, and other ways they are taking advantage of what the greater Portsmouth area has to offer. So far we’ve heard young people who want to support local farmers by buying direct, a singer from the Prescott Park Arts Festival, and a longtime resident who remembers some of Portsmouth’s first Farmers’ Markets and has watched it evolve.
Kim Sedlock hosts Monday’s ‘A Redhead Spins The Blues’ and Charlie Griffin is a member of the WSCA board. Both are excited to share with you one of Portsmouth’s most unifying and growing traditions, our Farmers’ Market!
The WSCA board has confirmed the following volunteers to director-level roles:
Angelynne Hinson - Music Director
Terry Blake - Assistant Music Director
Damon Thomas - Programming Director
Ann Haggart - News and Public Affairs Director

Portsmouth Community Radio Launches Live Downtown Broadcast
Starting Friday, July 8th, WSCA is giving listeners the opportunity to appreciate the Seacoast through the eyes of its visitors.
That’s the concept behind “Live From Market Square,” our new summertime weekly broadcast from Me & Ollie’s Bakery/Cafe on Pleasant Street, downtown Portsmouth. Hosted by Ann Haggart, the half-hour show features interviews with tourists to the area, engaging them in conversation about their lives, their travels, and their perceptions about our part of the world.
Live From Market Square airs on Fridays from 1:00 to 1:30 pm during the summertime months, and will continue up until August 19th. Kim Sedlock is handling the engineering responsibilities for the program, as well as those of Associate Producer.
Ann Haggart, who is our Director of News & Public Affairs, also hosts the weekly program Radiogazette (Fridays, 9-10 am). Ann has had a long career as a professional educator, is a published co-author of numerous professional articles and a national professional conference presenter. She lives in Hampton Falls.
“We’re grateful to Me & Ollie’s,” says Ann, “who is not only providing the venue for the new live broadcast, but is also a sponsor of the program.”
Thanks for your support during our recent membership drive! As a new or renewing member, you are entitled to a variety of discounts at local businesses. Check it out and enjoy!
